Overview

Barcelos is known for the city of the rooster, symbol of Portugal!

The Barcelos’s crafts have their own character with many stories as is the Route of the Figurado. In 2017, Barcelos was considered UNESCO Creative City in handicraft and folk art.

Barcelos is a city with a small diversity of monuments that tells a lot of history! It was once a very important territory at the commercial level.

The Barcelos Fair is one of the largest, oldest and most admired in Portugal, taking place every Thursday of the year.

Itinerary

Our tour starts in the morning when the Humus Travel guide picks you up at your hotel / accommodation.
Travel by Mercedes Class V van towards the city of Cock, Barcelos.
First visit to the city, after a short walk, is the Mother Church of Barcelos, which is next to the ruins of Paço dos Condes de Barcelos and the Pillory, it is in this area that you will have a privileged view of the Medieval Bridge of Barcelos and the wonderful Cávado River.
Free time for personal discovery.
We continue towards the Pottery Museum where you can enjoy Barcelense handicrafts, also recognized at national and world level, at your disposal there will be about 9000 pieces.
Near lunch time we start a short walk towards the restaurant, along the way we will appreciate the Tetro Gil Vicente, where typical Portuguese dishes will be served.
In the afternoon we go up Rua D. António, better known as Rua Direita, in this street we find several shops and cafes that gives access to Largo da Porta Nova where is located the Medieval Tower.
After the rise of the Medieval Tower and appreciation of the local works of art displayed there, we head towards the Baroque Garden dating from the 18th century.
It is time to be dazzled by the work of Joana Vasconcelos, the Giant Rooster of Barcelos that is exposed to everyone's eyes and has 15,000 LED lights that fill its surface.

Finally we go up Avenida da Liberdade and in the background is a bronze sculpture depicting a firefighter with a child on his lap resting on a granite stone base, the first to be erected in our country.
